How we got our start
The Loyal Oak Merchants Association of Welch’s Dairy Cream, the Loyal Oak Tavern and Nicolard’s Salon approached the Norton Lions Club with the thought of having an event that would bring people to Loyal Oak. Since the Lions Club had been selling their cider at the corner of Cleveland Massillon Road and Akron Wadsworth Road for years (they still do)...a perfect team was formed. Due to the close proximity of the historical Knecht Cider Mill in Loyal Oak... the Loyal Oak Cider Festival was born.
The first Cider Festival was held in 1989 on September 23rd and 24th. Hurricane Hugo came to town this same weekend and arrived in Norton at 5:00 am on Saturday. There was a torrential rain storm that came in sideways but by 9:30 am, the rain halted and gave way to the first Cider Festival parade. The first Cider Festival followed throughout the beautiful weekend.
After 19 years of successful festivals, it was decided to relocate the Loyal Oak Cider Festival to Columbia Woods Park. The 20th annual Loyal Oak Cider Festival became the Norton Cider Festival with this move.
